At the start of this month, one of the schools supported by the Born Free Foundation, Môreson Primary, received a very special gift.
The school is located in Paterson, a very rural and impoverished town near Shamwari Game Reserve and for the first time since the pupils of this school had been attending Môreson Primary, each student was given their own desk, and own chair. Before this, they had to either sit on the floor, or share a few broken chairs and tables between the 40 + learners.
When the 175 tables and chairs arrived, the excitement was immense and the pupils were keen to get them into the classrooms so they could start writing on proper tables. This donation was gifted to the school by Gerry and Douwe Helfrich, who paid for the transport of the container from Holland to South Africa. They have over the last few years sent over 150 containers full of second hand furniture. When schools dispose of their furniture, they give it to Gerry and Douwe, who pay to have it shipped to schools who are less fortunate.
It is amazing that something that we all took for granted when we were at school, can be such an amazing gift to others. So we need to say a big thanks to Gerry and Douwe, and to the the lovely volunteers from Worldwide Experience who helped to unload the tables and chairs and installed them in the classrooms.
