Let’s set the scene right, shall we?! ;)

It’s another warm sunny day in the African savannah, and Evan van der Spuy, South African Mountain Bike Racer from Team Jeep, is taking part in the Time Freight MTB Express Mountain race just outside Pietermaritzburg.

Behind him is fellow partner Travis Walker, not competing on the day, and who’s instead working for the marketing company sponsoring the event (Max Cluer Sports Marketing). Strapped to Walker’s bike is a GoPro camera to film the bikers in action.

Travis doesn’t know it yet, but he’s about to witness a very unlikely event.

All of a sudden, a Red Hartebeest storms across the road, and boom…hits Evan at full speed!

“It was freaky,” Walker said. “I saw it coming closer so I braked, thought it would go in between the gap. It hit him, lifted him off the ground, landed in the grass…he started making weird noises and I didn’t know what to do!”

Luckily for Van der Spuy, he was only diagnosed with a minor concussion and whiplash. He recently tweeted his status on the web, and mentioned how he was “all stable with nothing more than a stiff neck”.

Not too bad after a 150 kg collision at over 50 km/h, huh? ;) Evan was discharged from hospital on Monday morning.
