Jambo rafiki!

I have just landed in Nairobi, and it feels so GREAT to be back to Africa. It’s been about 10 years since the last time I came to Kenya, but it almost seems as if it was yesterday. The city centre is still very much congested (got stuck in traffic for about one hour; notice that the hotel is only 19 km away from the airport), the “matatus” (local mini buses) are still driving like maniacs, and the marabou storks have remained common residents in this urban jungle.

Currently, I am staying at the Boulevard Hotel on Harry Thuku Rd. Tomorrow is the big day as we embark on the overlanding trip. First stop is Lake Nakuru and its marvellous flamingo colony. Then we will head further up North West to Eldoret and the Uganda frontier.

Here’s a couple of pics of my present location. While Hotel Boulevard is by no means five star accommodation, it is certainly worth it. The rooms are basic but clean (you also have access to a safe which is a big bonus), and the garden is rather charming. I have not tested the food yet, but the hotel staff seems extremely pleasant and friendly. In other words, from what I’ve seen so far it offers great value for money (got my room at $77.58 + local taxes; $99.30 in total).

Hotel view from the garden!

Nice little bench to sit down and relax!

A local resident: Hadeda Ibis!

The pool area!

The hotel restaurant!

My hotel room!

Talk to you soon…

Giraffe "Kissing" at Nairobi Giraffe Center!

Giraffe “Kissing” at Nairobi Giraffe Center!

What is the Giraffe Center? The Giraffe Center situated in Nairobi's Langata suburb results from a Kenyan conservation organization, the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (A.F.E.W. Kenya). Its aim is to educate Kenyan school kids about their wildlife and environment, and to give local and international visitors an opportunity to get close encounters with a wild animal by feeding the world's tallest species, the giraffe!
