Lions are featured again this month, with footage of two majestic males roaring in the Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa.

The sound of male lions roaring has to be one of the most incredible things to hear in the African bush. The Lions’ repertoire of vocalizations is large and varies in intensity and pitch. Lions tend to roar in a very characteristic manner, starting with a few deep, long roars that trail off into a series of shorter ones. They most often roar at night with the sound reported to be heard from a distance of up to 8 kilometers away. Roaring is used to advertise the animal’s presence within an area and plays a crucial role in maintaining territorial boundaries.

Spectacular Lion Kill in Madikwe!

The following footage was taken by top class field guide, Craig Catton in the Madikwe Game Reserve. After following the pride of 14 lions for two days Craig and his guests were finally rewarded with what can only be described as an incredible sighting. The entire pride proceeded to fight over a male Impala which they had caught in thick bush. As the footage clearly shows, there was a lot of competition for the meal!
