AN EXTREMELY RARE incident between a warthog and a lion…
I stumbled across this amazing podcast the other day and thought I just HAD to share it with you guys! It takes place in the Masai Mara and involves two well-known animals of the African bushveld: “Pumba” (the warthog), and “Simba” (the lion). While in the “Lion King” Disney movie these fellows are best pals, in this case nevertheless things end up rather dramatically!
I’ve heard a lot of safari tales in the past, but to be completely honest with you have never (ever) come across this before! Absolutely fascinating!

If it is true, sounds like the warthog got lucky with a good shot to the neck. My guess is that only happens once out of a hundred encounters with the lion usually coming out on top.

I have seen an interesting encounter with cheetahs and warthogs in which a mother cheetah hissed and spat at a warthog so that it would not come near her cubs. In that case it was a maternal instinct at play with a very large and confident warthog.
It would be interesting to discuss whether these types of encounters happen more with female than male cats owing to a confidence issue. I wonder how a male lion would have acted with the warthog. Judging from the warthog in the burrow, the lioness could have possibly poked her head down to investigate and received the full force of a warthog accelerating upwards and out.
