Pete’s Pond

Pete’s Pond offers LIVE coverage from the Mashatu Game Reserve, a wholly preserved and untainted wilderness in eastern Botswana (at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers).

Be on the lookout for…

It’s not mere coincidence that Mashatu is called the “Land of the Giants”, as it is home to no less than seven of Africa’s “giants” – the African Elephant, the Lion, Giraffe, the Baobab Tree, the Eland, Ostrich and the Kori Bustard.

Other species of interest may include monitor lizards, baboons, vervet monkeys, warthogs, guinea fowls, and many other bird species (like the hammerkop).

What did you spot today?

Feel free to comment below to share your latest wildlife sightings! 😉

Cheers and enjoy your virtual safari!

Did the cam for Djuma close down, Michael? I noticed I haven’t been able to keep it running the last couple of days…not sure why. I remember I read something about them having to eventually close it down…did I read that right? It’s the only one that I have seen any of the big cats on…love them all, but this one and Kwa are my favs…thanks so much for having these for all of us too…take care, Michael

  6. Janet Patton Browning September 2, 2016 at 1:29 pm #

It’s a herd of elephants now drinking and getting themselves a dust bath…they are foraging in the trees now…this pond is little more than a mud hole right now…looks really shallow.

  11. Janet Patton Browning August 26, 2016 at 3:04 pm #

Elephants came for a drink…they are all wet now giving themselves a dust bath on the bank now…the water in the pond is really down…they need some rain to fill it back up.

  12. Janet Patton Browning August 18, 2016 at 10:49 pm #

A lone cow elephant drinking from the water and then foraging in the trees for a late nite bite to eat…lol

  13. Janet Patton Browning August 10, 2016 at 3:21 pm #

Croc up on the bank now…there are more warthogs now in a little routed out water are, taking a mud bath…cooling off, I suppose.

  14. Janet Patton Browning August 10, 2016 at 2:49 pm #

A big male warthog is scratching himself on the edge of the bank…I bet they really mess with the bank of the water holes.

Oh now, one of the older baby elephants, in this family, has a missing bottom part of his trunk…he is having a time trying to get water. Poor baby…

  16. Janet Patton Browning August 5, 2016 at 9:50 pm #

A family of elephants at the water hole drinking now…I hear a hyena somewhere in the background here too.

  17. Janet Patton Browning August 3, 2016 at 10:04 am #

Not sure which of the cams the sound is coming from, but I’m pretty sure I am hearing a lion call.

  18. Janet Patton Browning August 2, 2016 at 9:26 pm #

The experts say that an African black-footed cat is the rarest of all their small cats to actually spot there; they are also a protected species. It is truly amazing all the wild animals you can spot at any of these African cams…I can’t say it enough, “Thank you, thank you, Michael”. It is a wonderful opportunity to get to see all of these beautiful animals in the wild…as all wild animals truly should be, Ah…what I thought was rain, I think may have been Michael cleaning the lens…the picture is soo clear now…thank you, Michael, if that was you too…lol

  19. Janet Patton Browning August 2, 2016 at 9:06 pm #

A real treat this evening…an African black-footed cat…it is the smallest wild cat in Africa…way cool and it is beautiful.

  20. Janet Patton Browning August 2, 2016 at 3:30 pm #

I would think though, that being responsible for young in your group, would be enough to make any animal in Africa more wary. Finally, they are all drinking…a long wait for thirsty animals.

  21. Janet Patton Browning August 2, 2016 at 3:25 pm #

A pretty good sized croc is laying on the bank now…lots of turtles on the rocks in the water. Giraffes coming for a drink now too. a mother and her calf, it looks like…another grown one just joined them…for some reason, they are acting really nervous…I think a croc must have come up on the bank…they won’t go in to drink right yet…very wary of something at the water’s edge. Whatever the big giraffe is afraid of is in the bushes by the water, but a deer just came in and is drinking from the edge now…so not really sure what’s up.

  22. Janet Patton Browning August 1, 2016 at 4:25 pm #

Whoops…except other elephants…that just now showed up…they all look like bulls and 2 are really large ones…maybe a group of bachelors. Giraffes just showed up for a drink too, but I don’t think the elephants are gonna let them drink either…there were several deer waiting to come in for a drink too, but these elephants have staked out this waterhole for themselves…finally, the elephants move away and the giraffe and deer come in to drink…warthogs are coming in now too….sheesh, now its the crocs wanting to play boss…lol Another group of elephants just showed up…with a baby…this must be elephant day…I love watching them.

  23. Janet Patton Browning August 1, 2016 at 4:03 pm #

These big bull elephants are bossy…lol…the one that is playing in the water now, did the same thing to an antelope getting a drink…chased him off, as if to say, “this is my waterhole, go find your own”…lol He chased the wildebeest away too…he has been here drinking and playing for a good half hour now…not letting anyone else near his waterhole…too funny.

  24. Janet Patton Browning August 1, 2016 at 3:46 pm #

Two bull elephants throwing their weight around, just scared off the deer drinking…guess they had the elephants favorite place to drink…lol Awe, a really small baby elephant is getting water sprayed on he or she from one of the larger elephants…looks like the baby is delighted with it. The one baby looks like he is trying to scratch rubbing himself on the side of the bank…he isn’t very graceful trying though…too cute!!

  25. Janet Patton Browning August 1, 2016 at 3:25 pm #

Wow, this is a large herd of elephants…sounding off too and having a good ole time here…they are going all the way into the water now…cooling off, I suspect and wanting to play too. Slowly a few at a time, move off into the tree line now.

  26. Janet Patton Browning August 1, 2016 at 3:14 pm #

The warthogs are coming in now to drink. A giraffe and some deer drinking too. The frequent guinea fowl have come to drink now. The elephants have come now…looks likea whole of them…even the babies…too cute. Elephants are such majestic creatures to watch.

  27. Anonymous August 1, 2016 at 10:15 am #

Oh my goodness, an ostrich! :O

    • Anonymous August 1, 2016 at 10:18 am #

      Now two of them!

  28. Janet Patton Browning August 1, 2016 at 8:59 am #

Two bull elephants, a herd of deer, guinea fowl, wildebeest all getting a drink at the water hole now.

  29. Janet Patton Browning August 1, 2016 at 7:06 am #

Baboons and warthogs galore were at the waterhole this morning…this evening, the elephants are at the water’s edge drinking and mingling…they seem to be really enjoying their time at the waterhole

  30. Janet Patton Browning July 31, 2016 at 12:59 pm #

The crocs must have woke up; they almost grabbed one of the gazelles drinking water.

  31. Janet Patton Browning July 31, 2016 at 12:31 pm #

One lone adult giraffe drinking from the water hole this morning; a lone young warthog; a small herd of zebra came for a drink. A couple of gazelle just arrived to drink too.

  32. Janet Patton Browning July 31, 2016 at 7:12 am #

Wow, this is a really big herd of antelope here this morning, almost unbelievable how big this herd is…looks somewhere near 100 or more of them…largest herd I’ve seen yet here…such beautiful faces they have.

  33. Janet Patton Browning July 31, 2016 at 6:55 am #

The first hyena I’ve seen thus far watching any of the cams here. Two adult giraffes just showed up for a drink…a lone bull elephant getting a drink…such beautiful animals. A large herd of antelope just came to drink now.

  34. Janet Patton Browning July 30, 2016 at 6:58 pm #

a whole herd of antelope down at the water’s edge for a drink…they are acting very wary too. Zebra are drinking from the water hole now

  35. Janet Patton Browning July 30, 2016 at 5:11 pm #

A jackal, warthog and wildebeest so far this morning…the jackal was thirsty, but was super wary at the water’s edge…with good reason, saw a large croc earlier this morning looking very hungry.

  36. Janet Patton Browning July 30, 2016 at 7:59 am #

Large water bird, warthog, antelope and wildebeest and lots of guinea fowl this morning…now a jackal too. It is unreal how many guinea fowl are in this part of Africa; huge flocks of them show up every morning to drink and graze…I wonder who they become prey to.

  37. Janet Patton Browning July 29, 2016 at 11:58 pm #

Thank you, too, Michael for having this web cam…it is so enjoyable to watch these animals live like this. What a pleasure

  38. Janet Patton Browning July 29, 2016 at 11:55 pm #
