Pete’s Pond Cam

Pete’s Pond offers LIVE coverage from the Mashatu Game Reserve, a wholly preserved and untainted wilderness in eastern Botswana (at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers).

NB: This camera is now offline and it does not look like it will ever come back. We will definitely keep you posted if anything changes. In the meantime, you can watch other webcams here. Thank you.

Be on the lookout for…

It’s not mere coincidence that Mashatu is called the “Land of the Giants”, as it is home to no less than seven of Africa’s “giants” – the African elephant, the lion, giraffe, the baobab tree, the eland, ostrich and the kori bustard.

Other species of interest may include monitor lizards, baboons, vervet monkeys, warthogs, guineafowls, and many other bird species (like the hamerkop).

A pretty good sized croc is laying on the bank now…lots of turtles on the rocks in the water. Giraffes coming for a drink now too. a mother and her calf, it looks like…another grown one just joined them…for some reason, they are acting really nervous…I think a croc must have come up on the bank…they won’t go in to drink right yet…very wary of something at the water’s edge. Whatever the big giraffe is afraid of is in the bushes by the water, but a deer just came in and is drinking from the edge now…so not really sure what’s up.

Whoops…except other elephants…that just now showed up…they all look like bulls and 2 are really large ones…maybe a group of bachelors. Giraffes just showed up for a drink too, but I don’t think the elephants are gonna let them drink either…there were several deer waiting to come in for a drink too, but these elephants have staked out this waterhole for themselves…finally, the elephants move away and the giraffe and deer come in to drink…warthogs are coming in now too….sheesh, now its the crocs wanting to play boss…lol Another group of elephants just showed up…with a baby…this must be elephant day…I love watching them.

These big bull elephants are bossy…lol…the one that is playing in the water now, did the same thing to an antelope getting a drink…chased him off, as if to say, “this is my waterhole, go find your own”…lol He chased the wildebeest away too…he has been here drinking and playing for a good half hour now…not letting anyone else near his waterhole…too funny.

Two bull elephants throwing their weight around, just scared off the deer drinking…guess they had the elephants favorite place to drink…lol Awe, a really small baby elephant is getting water sprayed on he or she from one of the larger elephants…looks like the baby is delighted with it. The one baby looks like he is trying to scratch rubbing himself on the side of the bank…he isn’t very graceful trying though…too cute!!

Wow, this is a large herd of elephants…sounding off too and having a good ole time here…they are going all the way into the water now…cooling off, I suspect and wanting to play too. Slowly a few at a time, move off into the tree line now.

The warthogs are coming in now to drink. A giraffe and some deer drinking too. The frequent guinea fowl have come to drink now. The elephants have come now…looks likea whole of them…even the babies…too cute. Elephants are such majestic creatures to watch.

Baboons and warthogs galore were at the waterhole this morning…this evening, the elephants are at the water’s edge drinking and mingling…they seem to be really enjoying their time at the waterhole

One lone adult giraffe drinking from the water hole this morning; a lone young warthog; a small herd of zebra came for a drink. A couple of gazelle just arrived to drink too.

Wow, this is a really big herd of antelope here this morning, almost unbelievable how big this herd is…looks somewhere near 100 or more of them…largest herd I’ve seen yet here…such beautiful faces they have.

The first hyena I’ve seen thus far watching any of the cams here. Two adult giraffes just showed up for a drink…a lone bull elephant getting a drink…such beautiful animals. A large herd of antelope just came to drink now.

a whole herd of antelope down at the water’s edge for a drink…they are acting very wary too. Zebra are drinking from the water hole now

A jackal, warthog and wildebeest so far this morning…the jackal was thirsty, but was super wary at the water’s edge…with good reason, saw a large croc earlier this morning looking very hungry.

Large water bird, warthog, antelope and wildebeest and lots of guinea fowl this morning…now a jackal too. It is unreal how many guinea fowl are in this part of Africa; huge flocks of them show up every morning to drink and graze…I wonder who they become prey to.
