The African Safari Series Continued…

Background

If you are seeking out a safari in Tanzania you may want to consider the Ngorongoro and Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area. Despite its small stature of about 100 square mile, the basin is one of the most animal rich areas in Africa. In fact, you will most likely check every wild beast you ever wanted to see in its natural habitat off your list, both within and around the crater. Do you know that the caldera is home to THE highest density of predators, and to over 25,000 large animals?! Impressive, huh?! So yes, your chances of seeing abundant wildlife are very good! It can (and will) be one of the most exciting safari holidays you’ll ever have!

What a view!

Ngorongoro crater is a protected preserve and interspersed around the crater you will see the cattle of the local Maasai tribe who have permission to let their cattle graze around the area. You may also be privileged enough to get spectacular sights of buffalo grazing in and amongst the cattle. Quite a unique spectacle!

In the middle of nowhere!

Animal Sightings

The breathtaking natural landscape is home to some of the most fascinating animal beings. Expect to see huge concentrations of lions (over 60 individuals in 2001, just within the crater), buffalo, zebra and wildebeest. Although their numbers have been drastically reduced, there are also black rhinos that make the region their home. Unfortunately for them, the crater remains one of the last places in Africa where you are almost guaranteed to see these amazing prehistoric looking beasts! If luck is on your side, you may even encounter a leopard or two in the Lerai forest!

Soon to become extinct?

Back in Time

The area is so splendid and plentiful that it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. In addition to its abundant richness in wildlife and special scenery, the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area has an important historical value and is native soil to some of the oldest early hominid presence; Homo habilis and Paranthropus boisei! Do spend some time at Olduvai Gorge and learn more about a few of Mary and Louis Leakey’s most incredible findings!

Following the traces of early hominids!

A safari in the Ngorongoro is certain to be exciting and there will be no end to the sights. Like Tanzania itself this is one of Africa’s truly hidden gems. You can expect to see Africa as it really is and see these amazing animals living in their natural surroundings. Obviously, this is unlike any zoo you have ever seen and you would be hard pressed to have such an adventure anywhere in the world. Just be sure you are ready for it! You will experience things you have only seen on TV or in magazines before.

A visit to Ngorongoro basin for your travel safari will amaze and inspire you. So get your list of African animals you’d like to encounter and be ready to see most of them in and around the crater. This will be one of the most animal rich safaris you have ever been on or will ever go on! There is nothing like seeing the daily lives of real animals in their own habitat. Have fun visiting them in their homes. Enjoy! :)
